Corruption – Hubris – Overestimated indispensability/invincibility/protection – Miscalculation - Manufactured outrage – Political maneuvering – Faux resignations – Satiated egos – Reversion

Thats as much as I can be arsed to describe it. If you really want the most comprehensive and accurate (and best I’ve seen) explanation of whats going on, visit Prem Panicker’s blog.

The key here to me is the third term… it felled the likes of Harshad Mehta and Ramalinga Raju, both of whom didn’t act quickly enough to get out of a mess while they still could. I doubt Lalit Modi or Shashi Tharoor will face consequences as dire as the above two… nor any of the other big fish involved… the stink will eventually dissipate or more likely as in most things in the IPL be drowned out by perfumed air fresheners… and after lying low for a little while both should make strong comebacks – hehe almost put “returns” there – in their respective fields… both have clearly defined and important roles which will overrule this present, whats that word again, ah yes, scandal… and might emerge from this a little more cautious if not slightly humbled… haha, humbled Modi and Tharoor? Pull another one!

What Lalit Modi has done rather well over the last few years is make himself the face of the IPL, almost so well that it is incredibly difficult to imagine the tournament continuing without him. But it will if it must, even if only for a short time but keeping him out completely for good will take away much of how the IPL has become the biggest entertainment brand in this country. Hell, if it wasn’t for him, who knows if the rest of the dinosaurs that inhabit the BCCI would ever have considered the thought, let alone execute with the degree of success in so short a time-frame.

Yeah yeah, I know, corrupution smurruption. But you tell me one sphere of life in which there is no corruption, and not just in India but all over the world. Investment banks that seemed to be tottering on the brink of collapse and “urgently required” federal aid were able to pay back in full bailout money the minute bonuses to the top brass were threatened. It only cost a few ten million their jobs to contrive circumstances to get that bailout money in the first place. Countries that project themselves as paragons and champions of human rights protection, who never hesitate to point fingers at China, have started bringing out discriminatory laws against certain segments of their populations under – get this – the banner of equality. You have pharmaceutical and health insurance companies that… ok lets not even go there.

I’m not saying corruption is ok. I’m saying it is a fact of life today and is near ubiquitous. You don’t even need to worry about being caught anymore, as long as you have sufficient power to prevent your opponents from whipping up mass hysteria, or at least enough pull to ensure that the punishments are short and lenient as long as you’re willing to eat humble pie for a little while. And if you think this giant mess is going to end corruption anywhere and/or at any level then you’re fruitier than all the stalls at your neighborhood mango mela.

You stupid mango man, achettup. You thought it was all about clichés, marketing and cricket matches… well you know how they’ll brush this one away and make you smile once again… with their favorite marketing “for the king, honor and glory” stupid cliché for all time… “in the end cricket is the winner”… only it isn’t… its just another vehicle – one that metamorphosed from a stuffy old Ambassador to a sexy Bugatti Veyron overnight – for the rich-and-powerful-recently-converted-alleged “cricket fans” to take your money from right in front of your face, all the while laughing at how you lapped it all up. And you would never have known if it wasn’t for the tweets of a few pompous men…

You would have had an idea, but not understood the scale of deception… You would have known all along that things weren’t hunky dory and found it strange that the BCCI never chose to keep their accounting books – about YOUR national team – open to the public, but like the government who has been investigating this for over six months now, you had no reason to get upset while knowing all these things… nobody kicked up a storm or stirred you up enough to take a stand and say something about it…. and now you know, what are you going to do about it… oh wait, tomorrow is the semifinal, lets wait for that to finish… or you know what, lets wait for the IPL to finish, and then revisit this…
